Although seeing Suicide Squad will help you understand one fun visual reference to it during this film. No longer the Joker's girl, Harley has to find her own way in life. Other ladies in Gotham need find their own way as well. Police Detective Renee Montoya has been stuck in the same role for years while others get the promotions. Nightclub Singer Dinah turns a blind eye to the activities of her boss, Roman Sionis, AKA Black Mask. And his sidekick Zsasz. Orphan Cassandra Cain is just getting by as a pickpocket. And there's a mysterious lady with a crossbow in leathers on a motorbike killing people. What's her beef? All of these lives are about to collide... The film is focused on Harley first and foremost. And does some fun storytelling as a result. Breaking the fourth wall and not being entirely linear either. It's clever with this, as when - like in the film Dunkirk - you work how things fit together it's really rather satisfying. It does get more straight as a narrative in the second half, as things come together. But by then it really has you. All of the leads are great. Margot Robbie really gets her character once again. Jurnee Smollett Bell feels spot on as Dinah. Rosie Perez is a little older than comic book Montoya. But the reason for this works rather well. Whilst the film Cassandra is a rather different character to the comic version, she's still a strong creation. And Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, despite hovering in and out of the narrative and not getting a proper introduction till surprisingly late on, is absolutely brilliant, depicting a lady with great fighting skills and no idea how to interact with people. Ewan Mcgregor really makes sure you understand where Roman is coming from. The one slight disappointment is Zsasz, who despite one moment, could really have been any old thug. There's a brilliantly original and unique soundtrack. Some superbly audacious set pieces and fight scenes. Whilst it is Harley's film first and foremost, it does weave all the other into the narrative nicely, all having gotten proper origin stories by the end. This is not a kids film. It's got strong language and violence and adult references. But as with Joker, you wouldn't get a Marvel studios film like this, so it's nicely different. I could have done perhaps with one less fight scene. And the narrative does have to backtrack a bit too far at one point. But those are only minor complaints. This is superb entertainment.
